Soon, I’ll be covering “Into the Mouth of the Cat” in my Colorado Springs Gazette column. Malcolm McConnell’s book is the incredible true story of Lance Sijan, a Medal of Honor recipient. Husband had to read this book as a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. I’ve read it a few times. Below is Sijan’s MOH citation.

*SIJAN, LANCE P.

Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Air Force, 4th Allied POW Wing, Pilot of an F-4C aircraft. Place and Date: North Vietnam, 9 November 1967. Entered service at: Milwaukee, Wis. Born: 13 April 1942, Milwaukee, Wis.

Citation:
While on a flight over North Vietnam, Capt. Sijan ejected from his disabled aircraft and successfully evaded capture for more than 6 weeks. During this time, he was seriously injured and suffered from shock and extreme weight loss due to lack of food. After being captured by North Vietnamese soldiers, Capt. Sijan was taken to a holding point for subsequent transfer to a prisoner of war camp. In his emaciated and crippled condition, he overpowered 1 of his guards and crawled into the jungle, only to be recaptured after several hours. He was then transferred to another prison camp where he was kept in solitary confinement and interrogated at length. During interrogation, he was severely tortured; however, he did not divulge any information to his captors. Capt. Sijan lapsed into delirium and was placed in the care of another prisoner. During his intermittent periods of consciousness until his death, he never complained of his physical condition and, on several occasions, spoke of future escape attempts. Capt. Sijan’s extraordinary heroism and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty at the cost of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Air Force and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Armed Forces.

Laredo Border Patrol Agents Seize More Than a Ton of Marijuana

(Thursday, December 04, 2008)

contacts for this news release

Laredo, Texas – Laredo, Texas Border Patrol agents seized more than 2, 572 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value street value of $2.1 million in separate incidents this week.

The largest of the seizures occurred yesterday at a local checkpoint. Agents were conducting an immigration inspection on the driver of a 1999 Freightliner tractor trailer when a Border Patrol canine alerted toward the trailer, indicating the possible presence of hidden people or contraband. The vehicle was referred for secondary inspection and examined by the Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System, which uses gamma rays to produce an image similar to an X-ray. The machine image showed an anomaly at the rear portion of the trailer.

Agents opened the trailer and found 42 cellophane-wrapped bundles. The bundles contained marijuana with a total weight of 1,387.6 pounds and an estimated street value just over $1.1 million. The driver, the truck and the marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

On Tuesday, Laredo North agents received information of suspicious activity near La Bota Ranch. Agents responded to the area and located several abandoned bundles of marijuana hidden in a pasture of high grass. A total of 169.4 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $135,520 was seized and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Border Patrol agents near Laredo, Texas found almost 300 pounds of marijuana under this pick-ups false floor.

On Monday, Zapata station agents responded to a report of suspicious activity near Salado Creek. Agents responded to the area and encountered a GMC Suburban with two occupants inside. While performing an immigration inspection of the occupants, agents observed in plain view several bundles of marijuana inside the vehicle. The total weight of the marijuana seized was 494.5 pounds with an estimated value of $395,600. The subjects, marijuana and vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Other notable marijuana seizures were:

  • 290.5 pounds seized Monday by agents assigned to the Hebbronville station. Agents attempted to stop a 2003 Dodge Ram near Oilton, Texas. The driver and passenger absconded and left the vehicle abandoned. A detector canine alerted to the bed of the pickup truck. Agents discovered 67 bundles of marijuana inside the false bed of the truck. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $232,440. The marijuana and vehicle were turned over to DEA agents.
  • 218.8 pounds seized by agents assigned to the Laredo West station. They seized the drugs from a vehicle stop they made of two occupants driving a 1995 Chevrolet pick-up near the Colombia port of entry on Mines Road. The suspects attempted to escape but were apprehended by Laredo West agents a short distance from the initial stop. Inside the vehicle, agents located 10 bundles of marijuana. The marijuana, valued at $175,040, was turned over to DEA.
  • 11.2 pounds seized by agents assigned to the Laredo North station. Agents discovered two unclaimed bags in the luggage compartment of a commercial bus containing cellophane-wrapped bundles of marijuana with an estimated street value of $8,960. The drugs were turned over to the DEA

…and quite a bit to inspire specific actions as well.

Early links in this chain of discussion are here:

In Conversation…

That’s for background, in case you missed it earlier, and deals largely with the issue of how people make good on their jihadi ambitions, how they go from being just another hothead to being a hothead with TATP and/or an AK.

Now the conversation seems to be turning to information, which for our purposes can be viewed as a kind of line of communication. Lines of communication are what we work against, in the broad sense of “work against” and not necessarily the narrow, kinetic, “let’s blow shit up” sense. Blowing shit up is easy. Getting the other guy to blow his own shit up, without his knowing that he’s working on our behalf – now that’s art. But I digress 🙂

Marisa posts about some newer items:

Perhaps a reason, Marisa Urgo, 22 October 2008.

Will drives home one particular point, but the discussion is still in binary terms: this or that, yes or no.

Influence of Jihadi Forums, Will McCants, 20 October 2008.

Forums are important for the usual reasons, and they are important for the reasons Will cites. And they are also important for all the things many analysts don’t usually see or consider – like the private messaging, or the importance of being involved in the operation of a forum, or the distribution of information more generally, as an entry point, a kind of “starter terrorism,” which is what I was trying to get at here:

Regarding “Anatomy of a Modern Homegrown Terror Cell: Aabid Khan et al.”

My own recent bit about Nicky Reilly, the Big Friendly Terrorist™ is a bit off-topic, as it deals more with targeting, who to target, what to look for and where. I’ll mention it here because I think I’ve done a better job of explaining what I mean by ‘differential jihadization’, especially the core concepts of association and opportunity, both of which are susceptible to shallow definition. The theory is still very much a work in progress – identity is an issue, and I’m not sure whether it’s within motivation, or is best considered on it’s own, for example – but I think I may be onto something, so I’m pushing it out from under the porch to see how it plays with the other dogs.

Returning now to Marisa, she cites some earlier discussion from Tim and also a very interesting journal article:

“It Flows Narrow and Deep”, Marisa Urgo, 20 May 2008.

Global Information Flows, Tim Stevens, 25 April, 2008.

The journal article is the following, and if you pursue no other link here (and you’re involved in IO) READ THIS ONE:

Now, coming back around to Marisa, I like this piece:

Dismantling the Curve, Marisa Urgo, 12 October, 2008

Here’s a quote:

Jihadis may like to fancy themselves different from their kuffar enemy, but in reality they behave identical to every one else when it comes to their information habits. There’s a common misconception that online jihadi information is a vast, immeasurable, uncontrollable amount of internet data. This idea may make for poetic presentation statements (and excellent justifications for government program money), but it has little bearing in reality. Up until very recently, the vast majority of the OSINT jihadi material cycled through about ten or fifteen internet forums. An analyst monitoring those forums could have a handle on about 80% of the information flow within the jihadi online world. Since the beginning of September the jihadi powerlaw curve that had essentially existed since 2004 has been systematically dismantled. By what or whom I don’t know. I’ve worked in a wide range of subject areas since receiving my Master’s degree in the mid-90s, and I’ve been using and managing information years prior to that. I’ve seen fadish subjects come and go in popularity, shrinking the amount of available new information, but I’ve never seen a subject’s power law curve simply disappear.

Reminds me of a time when I was riding in the back of a 4×4 going up a narrow trail in a ravine near the border between Israel and the Sinai as sunset was fast approaching. The Englishman on board, an older gentleman from a military background, looked about and said:

“My, what a splendid place for an ambush.”

I’ll close this linkfest with something a bit more esoteric from Tim, quoting Virilio regarding cyberspace:

The development of information superhighways confronts us with a new phenomenon: disorientation. A fundamental disorientation which completes and perfects the social and financial deregulation whose baleful consequences we already know. Perceived reality is being split into the real and the virtual, and we are getting a kind of stereo-reality, in which existence loses its reference points. To be is to be in situ, here and now, hic et nunc. But cyberspace and instantaneous, globalized information are throwing all that into total confusion. What is now underway is a disturbance of the perception of the real: a trauma. And we need to concentrate on this. Because no technology has ever been developed that has not had to struggle against its own specific negativity. The specific negativity of information superhighways is precisely this disorientation of alterity, of our relation to the other and to the world. It is quite clear that this disorientation, this ‘de-situation’, will bring about a profound disturbance with consequences for society and, in turn, for democracy.

Disorientation, while it may be a problem if we suffer from it, is also a good thing to cause in the minds of our adversaries – who happily enough find themselves rather deeply embedded in cyberspace. [back to contents]

Convergence of the depraved

One could make too much of this, and wind up grasping at straws, but such convergences as this have been observed over the past seven years, and they will continue to come up from time to time.

As just one example, the founder of the original Global Islamic Media Centre – which was later superseded by the Global Islamic Media Front (operated by a team of individuals with little or no connection to the founder) – was last reported awaiting trial in Canada on charges of possession of child porn. How Abu explained this to his daughter Banan I don’t know…

In the UK, authorities have taken notice of a certain overlap between extremists and paedophiles. Quote:

Through glimpses of these characters, a pattern can be seen: the same kind of obsessive, sometimes paranoid, individual who becomes skilled in locating the rotten fruit of the internet, from bombmaking instructions to child pornography.

Origins

The predecessor of Haganah was Hashomer (השומר, The Guild of Watchman) established in 1909, itself a successor of Bar-Giora, founded in 1907. It was a small group of Jewish immigrants who guarded settlements for an annual fee. At no time did the group have more than 100 members.

After the 1920 Arab riots and 1921 Jaffa riots, the Jewish leadership in Palestine believed that the British (whom the League of Nations had given a mandate over Palestine in 1920) had no desire to confront local Arab gangs over their attacks on Palestinian Jews. Realizing that they could not rely on the British administration for protection from these gangs, the Jewish leadership created the Haganah to protect their farms and Kibbutzim. In addition to guarding Jewish communities, the role of the Haganah was to warn the residents of and repel attacks by Palestinian Arabs. In the period between 1920–1929, the Haganah lacked a strong central authority or coordination. Haganah “units” were very localized and poorly armed: they consisted mainly of Jewish farmers who took turns guarding their farms or their kibbutzim. Following the Arab massacres of 1929, the Haganah’s role changed dramatically. It became a much larger organization encompassing nearly all the youth and adults in the Jewish settlements, as well as thousands of members from the cities. It also acquired foreign arms and began to develop workshops to create hand grenades and simple military equipment, transforming from an untrained militia to a capable underground army.

Haganah members in training (1947)

Haganah members in training (1947)

In 1936 the Haganah fielded 10,000 mobilized men along with 40,000 reservists. During the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, it participated actively to protect British interests and to quell Arab rebellion using the FOSH, and then HISH units. Although the British administration did not officially recognize the Haganah, the British security forces cooperated with it by forming the Jewish Settlement Police, Jewish Auxiliary Forces and Special Night Squads, which were trained and led by Colonel Orde Wingate. The battle experience gained during this time was to become very useful in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

Many Haganah fighters objected to the official policy of havlagah (restraint) that Jewish political leaders (who had become increasingly controlling of the Haganah) had imposed on the militia. Fighters had been instructed to only defend communities and not initiate counter attacks against Arab gangs or their communities. This policy appeared defeatist to many who believed that the best defense is a good offense and, in 1931, the most militant elements of the Haganah splintered off and formed the Irgun Tsva’i-Leumi (National Military Organization), better known as “Irgun” (or by its Hebrew acronym, pronounced “Etsel”). In 1940, the Irgun also split over the issue of whether or not to attack the British during World War II and their off-shoot became known as the “Lehi” (Hebrew acronym of Lochamei Herut Yisrael, standing for Fighters for the Freedom of Israel, widely known as the “Stern Gang” after its leader, Abraham Stern).

By 1939, the British had severely restricted Jewish immigration to Palestine and were importing Arab labor from other parts of the Middle East. In response, the Haganah built up the Palmach as the Haganah’s elite strike force and organized illegal Jewish immigration to Palestine. (The Palmach had actually been formed with the British as a response to the threat of German invasion by Rommel’s forces. It went underground after it felt betrayed by the British at the end of 1942 following Rommel’s defeat) Approximately 100,000 Jews were brought to Palestine in over one hundred ships during the final decade of the Ha’apala. The Haganah also organized demonstrations against British immigration quotas.

In 1944, after the assassination of Lord Moyne, (the British Minister of State for the Middle East), by members of the Lehi, the Haganah worked with the British to kidnap, interrogate, and in some cases, deport Irgun members. This action was called The Saison, or hunting season, and was directed against the Irgun and not the Lehi possibly due to the perceived political threat the Irgun presented to David Ben Gurion‘s position of leadership. Future Jerusalem mayor Teddy Kollek was later revealed to be the official most responsible, under the code name Scorpion, for turning Irgun activists over to the British authorities. Many Jewish youth, who had joined the Haganah in order to defend the Jewish people, were greatly demoralized by operations against their own people. The Irgun, paralyzed by the Saison, were ordered by their commander, Menachem Begin, not to retaliate in an effort to avoid a full blown civil war. Although many Irgunists objected to these orders, they obeyed Begin and refrained from fighting back. The Saison eventually ended due to perceived British betrayal becoming more obvious to the public and Haganah youth becoming increasingly vocal in their opposition to the policy.

The Saison officially ended when the Haganah, Irgun and the Lehi formed the Hebrew Resistance Movement. Within this new framework, the three groups had different functions, which served to drive the British out of Palestine and create a Jewish state. As Menachem Begin stated in a 1944 meeting: “In fact, there is a division of roles; one organization advocates individual terrorism (Lehi), the other conducts sporadic military operations (Irgun) and there is a third organization which prepares itself to throw its final weight in the decisive war.” This united effort lasted for a total of nine months until the Irgun bombing of the King David Hotel‘s south wing. Although the Haganah had sanctioned the operation and the Irgun phoned in two warnings to the British, the hotel was not evacuated and 91 people were killed in the explosion. Shocked by the death toll and worried about the negative image this would generate, the Haganah quickly distanced itself from both the Irgun and the Lehi.

World War II participation

to the flag!"

A British recruitment drive poster for the Jewish Brigade from the 1940s reads: “Soldiers of 1915-1918: to the flag!”

Despite the 1939 White Paper which deeply angered the Zionist leadership in Palestine, Ben-Gurion, then chairman of the Jewish Agency, set the policy for the Zionist relationship with the British: We shall fight the war against Hitler as if there were no White Paper, and we shall fight the White Paper as if there were no war. The Irgun, however took a more extreme stance starting in 1944 and began bombing British installations.

In the first years of World War II, the British authorities asked Haganah for cooperation again, due to the fear for an Axis breakthrough in North Africa. After Rommel was defeated at El Alamein in 1942, the British stepped back from their all-out support for Haganah. In 1943, after a long series of requests and negotiations, the British Army announced the creation of the Jewish Brigade Group. While Palestinian Jews had been permitted to enlist in the British army since 1940, this was the first time an exclusively Jewish military unit served in the war under a Jewish flag. The Jewish Brigade Group consisted of 5,000 soldiers and was deployed in Italy in September 1944. The brigade was disbanded in 1946.

All in all, more than 30,000 Palestinian Jews served in the British army during the war.

On May 19, 1941 the Haganah created the Palmach (an acronym for Plugot Mahatz—strike companies), an elite military-like section which focused on providing training to youngsters. It was never large — by 1947 it amounted to merely five battalions (about 2,000 men) — but its members had received not only physical and basic military training, but also acquired leadership skills that, in retrospect, would allow them to take up command positions in Israel’s future army.

After the war

After the war, the Haganah carried out anti-British operations in Palestine, such as the liberation of interned immigrants from the Atlit camp, the bombing of the country’s railroad network, sabotage raids on radar installations and bases of the British Palestine police. It also continued to organize illegal immigration.

On May 28, 1948, less than two weeks after the creation of the state of Israel on May 15, the provisional government created the Israeli Defense Forces which would succeed the Haganah. It also outlawed maintenance of any other armed force.

Famous members of the Haganah included: Yitzhak Rabin, Ariel Sharon, Rehavam Zeevi, Dov Hoz, Moshe Dayan, Yigal Allon and Dr. Ruth Westheimer.

The Museum of Underground Prisoners in Jerusalem commemorates the activity of the underground groups in the pre-state period, recreating the every day life of those imprisoned there.

US special forces launch rare attack inside Syria ALBERT AJI, Associated Press Writer Albert Aji, Associated Press Writer –Abu Kamal, Syria, where U.S. military launched rare attack on fighter network; DAMASCUS, Syria – U.S. military helicopters launched an extremely rare attack Sunday on Syrian territory close to the border with Iraq, killing eight people in a strike the government in Damascus condemned as “serious aggression.” A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq. The Americans have been unable to shut the network down in the area because Syria was out of the military’s reach. “We are taking matters into our own hands,” the official told The Associated Press in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the political sensitivity of cross-border raids. The attack came just days after the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq said American troops were redoubling efforts to secure the Syrian border, which he called an “uncontrolled” gateway for fighters entering Iraq. A Syrian government statement said the helicopters attacked the Sukkariyeh Farm near the town of Abu Kamal, five miles inside the Syrian border. Four helicopters attacked a civilian building under construction shortly before sundown and fired on workers inside, the statement said. The government said civilians were among the dead, including four children. A resident of the nearby village of Hwijeh said some of the helicopters landed and troops exited the aircraft and fired on a building. He said the aircraft flew along the Euphrates River into the area of farms and several brick factories. The witness spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said it summoned the charges d’affaires of the United States and Iraq to protest against the strike. “Syria condemns this aggression and holds the American forces responsible for this aggression and all its repercussions. Syria also calls on the Iraqi government to shoulder its responsibilities and launch and immediate investigation into this serious violation and prevent the use of Iraqi territory for aggression against Syria,” the government statement said. The area targeted is near the Iraqi border city of Qaim, which had been a major crossing point for fighters, weapons and money coming into Iraq to fuel the Sunni insurgency. Iraqi travelers making their way home across the border reported hearing many explosions, said Farhan al-Mahalawi, mayor of Qaim. On Thursday, U.S. Maj. Gen. John Kelly said Iraq’s western borders with Saudi Arabia and Jordan were fairly tight as a result of good policing by security forces in those countries but that Syria was a “different story.” “The Syrian side is, I guess, uncontrolled by their side,” Kelly said. “We still have a certain level of foreign fighter movement.” He added that the U.S. was helping construct a sand berm and ditches along the border. “There hasn’t been much, in the way of a physical barrier, along that border for years,” Kelly said. The foreign fighters network sends militants from North Africa and elsewhere in the Middle East to Syria, where elements of the Syrian military are in league with al-Qaida and loyalists of Saddam Hussein’s Baath party, the U.S. military official said. He said that while American forces have had considerable success, with Iraqi help, in shutting down the “rat lines” in Iraq, and with foreign government help in North Africa, the Syrian node has been out of reach. “The one piece of the puzzle we have not been showing success on is the nexus in Syria,” the official said. The White House in August approved similar special forces raids from Afghanistan across the border of Pakistan to target al-Qaida and Taliban operatives. At least one has been carried out. The flow of foreign fighters into Iraq has been cut to an estimated 20 a month, a senior U.S. military intelligence official told the Associated Press in July. That’s a 50 percent decline from six months ago, and just a fifth of the estimated 100 foreign fighters who were infiltrating Iraq a year ago, according to the official. Ninety percent of the foreign fighters enter through Syria, according to U.S. intelligence. Foreigners are some of the most deadly fighters in Iraq, trained in bomb-making and with small-arms expertise and more likely to be willing suicide bombers than Iraqis. Foreign fighters toting cash have been al-Qaida in Iraq’s chief source of income. They contributed more than 70 percent of operating budgets in one sector in Iraq, according to documents captured in September 2007 on the Syrian border. Most of the fighters were conveyed through professional smuggling networks, according to the report. Iraqi insurgents seized Qaim in April 2005, forcing U.S. Marines to recapture the town the following month in heavy fighting. The area became secure only after Sunni tribes in Anbar turned against al-Qaida in late 2006 and joined forces with the Americans. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem accused the United States earlier this year of not giving his country the equipment needed to prevent foreign fighters from crossing into Iraq. He said Washington feared Syria could use such equipment against Israel. Though Syria has long been viewed by the U.S. as a destabilizing country in the Middle East, in recent months, Damascus has been trying to change its image and end years of global seclusion. Its president, Bashar Assad, has pursued indirect peace talks with Israel, mediated by Turkey, and says he wants direct talks next year. Syria also has agreed to establish diplomatic ties with Lebanon, a country it used to dominate both politically and militarily, and has worked harder at stemming the flow of militants into Iraq. The U.S. military in Baghdad did not immediately respond to a request for comment after Sunday’s raid. _____ Associated Press reporter Pamela Hess in Washington and Sam F. Ghattas in Beirut contributed to this report.

I found out!!

Earlier today I posted the above pic (scroll down if you want to see a larger one of it) and said that while I know where the Governor was last night – watching the debate with her husband Todd – I don’t know where she is today. Now I know…I received this email below from FNC embed producer Shush who is traveling with the Governor Palin campaign…

From: Walshe, Shushannah

Subject: Palin in Bangot

LIVE
Bangor, Maine

Palin was greeted by her usual boisterous crowd of thousands (after more subdued crowds yesterday in NH) at an airplane hangar here.

She mentioned her running mate’s debate last night and laid out the differences in the two candidates. She used many of the same lines she used after his last debate, but added some new ones: “The choice between a politician who wants to raise taxes and redistribute your hard earned money according to his priorities and a true reformer who wants to lower taxes and create jobs and get this economy back on track.”

She didn’t forget the most talked about man after last night’s debate: Joe the Plumber, “It’s the choice between a candidate who will raise your taxes, and that threatens our future, and a leader who’s going to Washington to work for Joe the plumber and people like my sister’s family.”

She cited Joe the plumber again when saying that a McCain-Palin administration would cut taxes, but then jabbed Joe Biden saying the “other Joe” will not. She again mentioned voter fraud when talking about the candidate differences, “You know, we want to cut taxes because we think like Joe or Jane the plumber thinks, OK? Our opponents want to raise taxes because they think like that other Joe, that six-term senator from Delaware whom I’m running against. In this election, it’s a choice between a candidate who won’t disavow a group committing voter fraud and a leader who will not tolerate the voter fraud.”

Palin repeated one of JSM’s lines from last night saying if BHO wanted to run against GWB he should have done it 4 years ago, “As John McCain reminded Barack Obama last night, if he wanted to run against George Bush he had his chance four years ago (big applause). This year the name on the ballot is John McCain and America knows that John McCain is his own man, he is the maverick.”

She was introduced by Maine Senator Olympia Snowe and when she took the podium she said that Maine knows “something about those cracks in the glass ceiling, but the women of America aren’t finished yet. Maine with your help this November we are going to shatter once and for all that final glass ceiling.”

She said JSM is ready to lead and inspires with deeds, not just words, “ready and worthy to lead it, someone who inspires with heroic and trustworthy deeds, and not just words.”

She also gave a shout out to the NRA members in the crowd when she first got on the microphone saying that their hats remind her of Alaska, “I feel like I am at home because I see the Carhartt’s and the steel-toed boots. And I see mixed in there with the suits and the ties, the NRA hats and all those good things that remind me of home.”

She repeated her line that we do not have to apologize for being Americans adding there is a reason we get teared up when Lee Greenwood sings (who performed before she spoke), “We believe also that there is a reason we all still get teared up when we hear Lee Greenwood sing about America. Because we love America and are always proud to be Americans and do not apologize for being Americans.

VERBATES:
DEBATE DIFFERENCES
10:16:39 “I know you were up late last night watching the debate. How did John McCain do? Yes yes! Last night everyone in America got a clear look at the choice that we face on November 4th. It’s the choice between a politician who puts his faith in government and a leader who puts his faith in all of you. The choice between a politician who wants to raise taxes and redistribute your hard earned money according to his priorities and a true reformer who wants to lower taxes and create jobs and get this economy back on track.”

DEBATE DIFFERENCES/JOE THE PLUMBER
10:17:35 “It’s the choice between a candidate who will raise your taxes, and that threatens our future, and a leader who’s going to Washington to work for Joe the plumber and people like my sister’s family. My sister, who owns a service station and millions of you small business owners, millions of Americans struggling to sustain a small business, these are the differences. You know, we want to cut taxes because we think like Joe or Jane the plumber thinks, OK? Our opponents want to raise taxes because they think like that other Joe, that six-term senator from Delaware whom I’m running against. In this election, it’s a choice between a candidate who won’t disavow a group committing voter fraud and a leader who will not tolerate the voter fraud. Maine, it’s the difference on Nov. 4 between just inspiring words and inspiring and trustworthy deeds. Maine, soon the choice will be yours to make, and I’m sure that you all remember the saying that as Maine goes, so goes the nation. Yes. So I am here to ask you, are you ready to help us carry the state of Maine to victory?”

IF HE WANTED TO RUN AGAINST GWB THEN HE SHOULD HAVE DONE IT 4 YEARS AGO
10:20:08 You know for a campaign that says it’s all about the future our opponents sure do like to talk a lot about the past and point fingers backwards and they look to the past because that’s where you find blame. We are joining you in looking to the future because that’s where you find solutions. (applause). They look to the past because they’d rather run against the current administration, it sounds like, and that strategy though, thankfully, it’s really starting to wear very, very thin. As John McCain reminded Barack Obama last night, if he wanted to run against George Bush he had his chance four years ago (big applause). This year the name on the ballot is John McCain and America knows that John McCain is his own man, he is the maverick. It was from an enemy prison camp to the halls of Congress, John McCain has always, always put his country first. He talks about the wars that America is fighting and he isn’t afraid to use the word victory. (applause) If you notice our opponent gives speech after speech about the wars America is fighting. It sure would be nice if just once Barack Obama would say that he wants America to win.

GLASS CEILING
10:15 “It’s so great to be here in the state that has elected Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, has elected Sen. Olympia Snowe and Sen. Susan Collins. Maine, you all know something about those cracks in the glass ceiling, but the women of America aren’t finished yet. Maine with your help this November we are going to shatter once and for all that final glass ceiling.”

JSM READY TO LEAD THE COUNTRY
10:37:47 We believe in the promise of this country, in all the opportunities that we wish for ourselves and for each other, and for our sons and for our daughters. And we believe that America is not the problem, America is the solution. We still believe that America is that shining city on a hill that Ronald Reagan used to speak of, and thank god we have a man ready and worthy to lead it, someone who inspires with heroic and trustworthy deeds, and not just words. (John McCain).

NRA HATS
10:15:22 Thank you so much for that warm welcome. I feel like I am at home because I see the carhartt’s and the steel-toed boots. And I see mixed in there with the suits and the ties, the NRA hats and all those good things that remind me of home.

ALWAYS PROUD TO BE AMERICANS:
10:38:58 We believe also that there is a reason we all still get teared up when we hear Lee Greenwood sing about America. Because we love America and are always proud to be Americans and do not apologize for being Americans.

1500 GM hourly workers are being laid off. With John’s plan to give money to the top of the business it would help GM keep those men and women working. With Obama’s plan he would give those 1500 hourly workers a check so they can be unemployed. How does this help the economy===========================================================YES OBAMA HAS THE RIGHT IDEA TAX THE HELL OUT OF GM SO THEY CANT STAY IN BUSINESS THATS THE ANSWER

GRETA,
I FEEL BETTER TODAY SEEING BOTH JOHN AND SARAH, DOING THEIR PART TO SPREAD THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR REAL CHOICES, IN THIS ELECTION YEAR. BARACK MADE A REAL MISTAKE WHEN HE TALKED TO JOE THE PLUMBER, FINALLY SOMEONE REALLY HEARD FROM HIS OWN MOUTH, WHAT A BARRACK OBAMA PRESIDENCY WILL MEAN TO THE WORKING PEOPLE. WORK HARD, BUILDING UP ENOUGH MONEY TO START-UP A SMALL BUSINESS, SO BARACK OBAMA CAN, REACH INTO YOUR POCKET, AND REDISTRIBUTE YOUR WEALTH! THIS ALONE IS ENOUGH REASON TO RECONSIDER VOTING FOR HIM. HIS IDEA OF THE AMERICAN DREAM, SOUND’S A LITTLE MORE LIKE REVEREND WRIGHT’S SPEACHES TO ME. DON’T YOU REMEMBER HEARING HIM ON TAPE, DURING THE SERMON IN TRINITY CHURCH, WHERE BARACK OBAMA AND FAMILY ATTENDED MASS FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS. BARACK’S VOICE MAY BE SOFTER, AND MORE CONTROLLED, BUT IT DOESN’T CHANGE THE MESSAGE, AMERICAN’S OWE PEOPLE A LOT. PLEASE THINK ABOUT THIS STATEMENT PEOPLE! SOME HAVE SAID, IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS TO ME, WELL IF HE GETS IN AND DOESN’T DO AS HE’S PROMISED, WE”LL JUST VOTE HIM OUT IN FOUR YEARS! DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THAT CHANCE? FOUR YEARS OF LOSING MORE MONEY, ISN’T GOING TO HELP ME PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS? WE ALL HAVE TO MAKE THE BIG DECISION ON NOVEMBER 4th, IT COULD BE A LIFE CHANGING ONE. WE HAVE A WONDERFUL LIFE HERE, IN THE UNITED STATES. MANY HAVE GIVEN EVERYTHING, TO KEEP US FREE AND SAFE HERE. JOHN McCAIN AND SARAH PALIN WILL MAKE SURE WE REMAIN SAFE AND SECURE, AND CONTINUE TO ENJOY THAT AMERICAN DREAM. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

October 16th, 2008 at 2:21 pm The reason Obama is so cool, calm and collected is because he has “disassociation with reality”, these are people who zone out what is going on around them and keep going forward with what they alone believe in and can’t comprehend that someone would challenge their thoughts.

I agree, he kinda reminds me of Casey Anthony.

I was REAL disappointed in the conversation immediately after the debate with Britt Hume and guest! It seemed so left!!!!!!!! I have just switched from CNN to Fox because I love to watch Bill O’Reilly, Greta and Sean Hannity but, I definately won’t be watching Britt Hume again!
Mr. McCain you were great! I have always been a big believer in you and your ideas for this country. Sarah…I am so glad you are as strong as you are, not allowing anyone or anything to stand in the way of your beliefs which by the way are straight from this great country’s founding fathers! GOD is watching and he is very sad that so many people would agree with Obama, that he would not stand up for all the innocent little babies who don’t have a choice but to be murdered! God’s Commandment: thou shalt not kill! There are so many people out there who would give their right arm for a precious baby, is it too much to ask to at least protect the baby until it is born and then give it to a family who are desperately wanting children! You took the risk of getting pregnant, it’s not the baby’s fault! At least carry the baby to term and let these loving families have them.
And to not protect our friends in Israel…is absolutely obsurd! Mr. Obama, you are playing with GOD now and let’s not forget what happened in Sodom and Gomorreah when those people failed to follow his commandments/laws..

Keep Fighting hard John and Sarah and GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!!

Even in the primary it seems that the news has given Obama as the winner. I think what they
did to Hilary was terrible. It should have went to the convention and then voted on the winner.

First of all, it is “should have gone” not went…………
If Hillary would be running now instead of Obama, you would find something to transh her!!!!!
and as far as Palin having more qualifications than senator Obama, if you really think that is so, you need to have your head examined!

Obama never corrected anything Fox had said about him, instead he did the spin dance around the question.

If Obama is elected, he will find a way to eliminate 401k plans. I would then be forced to stuff my money under the mattress. I don’t know how else to protect it from being stolen from me. I’ve saved for retirement all of my life, and now Obama and his ilk want to give it all to those who haven’t bothered to plan, and expect the “government” to take care of them. I’m so sick of having Obama pushed in my face everywhere I turn – even FOX. It’s clear that money talks. I am a single working woman, but I am making a donation to the McCain campaign. Without the support of people who believe in him, McCain is in danger of losing to the “kool-aid” drinkers. Even my mom scared me today when she said it would be okay no matter who got elected. I told her that is not true, and found out that she’s been watching one of the mass media news stations. PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP ON McCAIN/PALIN – that is what they’re trying to make us do!!! As for that 29 minute campaign speech he and his backers have bought – I will turn off my television while it’s on.

Joe Biden is the that voted to change the laws on credit. He and others are letting the
credit card companies to what they please to people on interest rates. The banks
need to be held accountable for the part in the credit crunch and made to lower rates
and have a lower cap on credit cards. Then the people can make their payments.

20 months ago Obama raised the race card to incite the American people. He said, “They are going to scare you because I don’t look like the other presidents on the dollar bill, I have a funny name, I have a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya.”
That did not get John McCain riled, so out comes Gov. Rendell of PA (Hillary supporter) and says “PA will never vote for a black president”, that did not get John McCain riled up, so out comes John Lewis (Hillary supporter) and says “McCain and Palin are racists because they’re campaign is like the 1960’s racists George Wallace and the Jim Crowe tactics”, that made John McCain hurt by the remark, but it did not get John McCain riled up, now out comes John Murtha (Hillary supporter) from Western PA saying western PA is racist. Makes me wonder if Rendell, Lewis and Murtha are deliberately working against Obama by these remarks.

Well, unlike you, I don’t overvalue the news media. I don’t respect their questions. I don’t appreciate their thinking. I can do that all on my own quite nicely. So, I do understand why all you Obamanuts are so entralled with the media, because Obama gets a free pass. Even his farts are the sweetest. Women swoon at his rally’s. Nothing Sarah says or does is going to change my mind, and obviously the same with you. So, stop the nonsense. Quit the sexism. And I am so proud to have a women on the ticket, and I would love in my lifetime to see her become President.

You all need to tell Obama that he needs to go back more than 8 years of our history. Check out the revolutionary war and the reason for it. Why? Taxes. Obama just not get it folks, and it is so sad to see my fellow Americans not getting it either.

Hi Greta, I have a question…about Jr. Senator Obama’s statement against Fox News…
saying very little good about him which is another not truth from Obama, but what I find very
interesting is the statement… if it wasn’t for Fox News Obama would be up a couple more points in
the polls……my question than is IF (ALL) THE MAIN STREET MEDIA AND THE (ALL) OTHER CABLE STATION AND (ALL) OTHER MEDIA NEWSPAPERS AND (ALL) MAGAZINES WERE FAIR AND BALANCE WITH MCCAIN/PALIN HOW MANY POINTS AHEAD WOULD THEY BE???
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You’re absolutely right.
If all of the media were fair and unbiased, Obama would be down a lot of points.
If it weren’t for Fox I wouldn’t know half of what I know about Obama’s past.

My family and I saw and cheered and applauded McCain’s performance all through the debate, then switched on Fox to hear a pleasant post debate coverage. Did that team even see the same debate we saw? Or has Fox decided to be just like every other network – nothing but pro liberals all the time, no matter what? We are sad.

Even in the primary it seems that the news has given Obama as the winner. I think what they
did to Hilary was terrible. It should have went to the convention and then voted on the winner.
McClain and Plain will make a better team. But the news are ready to give it Obama.
Something smells rotten, it’s as this election has been fixed from day one. America needs to
remember the enemy plans for years and years to put their plan in effect. The stock market
can be controled by those with billions of dollars and when they want to do it to affect the
election. So they can scare everyone into voting for Obama. Obama in office with Pelosi and
Franks would be hell for the average america that work hard for what they get. Handouts for
really needy is fine but the ones capable of working should do so. Our parents worked hard
and did so for low wages and still gave us what we needed and also moral values. If Obama worries so much for the little people why didn’t he donate the 800,000.00 to the
programs that feed our hungry children here in the U.S. instead of giving to ACORN, which is
just a faud. I for one is tired of hearing the “RACE” card played to give them their way.
If the person has the experience to do the job race doesn’t matter, but Obama doesn’t have
that kind of experience for the job. Democratic congress has done a sorry job for the last
2 years, so just think what it would be with a democrate president. McClain does have that
experience and Palin has the experience it takes run a state. What does Obama have, running
for president the time he has been the senate. Sounds like a lawyer in court who gets the
crook off when guilty as sin.

Brit and crew won’t make this list today! I was stunned, shocked and bewildered all at the same time.
I mean they caved for Obama and all he had to do is say 1 thing about how Fox is bringing his numbers down! Now it’s up to Greta and Sean I guess!
=======================
I was surprised they seemed to overlook all Obama’s continued promise of Robin Hood tactics which are completely off the table with the way the economy is going. Obama talks a bout the debt we are in right now and then preceeded to proclaim his plans which would only add more debt.

Barack Obama should start spreading the wealth with his friend Warren Buffet’s money! Then he can start spreading the wealth with his movie star friends money such as Barbara Striesand, then he can start spreading the wealth with all the multi-million dollar salaries that many athletes in this country earn. There is no way I would vote for Obama.

Secret Service says “Kill him” allegation unfounded
By Andrew M. Seder aseder@timesleader.com
Staff Writer

SCRANTON – The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.

The Scranton Times-Tribune first reported the alleged incident on its Web site Tuesday and then again in its print edition Wednesday. The first story, written by reporter David Singleton, appeared with allegations that while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Obama’s name a man in the audience shouted “kill him.”

News organizations including ABC, The Associated Press, The Washington Monthly and MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann reported the claim, with most attributing the allegations to the Times-Tribune story.

Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.

“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.

He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.

Slavoski said more than 20 non-security agents were interviewed Wednesday, from news media to ordinary citizens in attendance at the rally for the Republican vice presidential candidate held at the Riverfront Sports Complex. He said Singleton was the only one to say he heard someone yell “kill him.”

“We have yet to find someone to back up the story,” Slavoski said. “We had people all over and we have yet to find anyone who said they heard it.”

Hackett said he did not hear the remark.

Slavoski said Singleton was interviewed Wednesday and stood by his story but couldn’t give a description of the man because he didn’t see him he only heard him.

When contacted Wednesday afternoon, Singleton referred questions to Times-Tribune Metro Editor Jeff Sonderman. Sonderman said, “We stand by the story. The facts reported are true and that’s really all there is.”

Slavoski said the agents take such threats or comments seriously and immediately opened an investigation but after due diligence “as far as we’re concerned it’s closed unless someone comes forward.” He urged anyone with knowledge of the alleged incident to call him at 346-5781. “We’ll run at all leads,” he said.

New York CBP Officers Arrest United States Citizen Wanted by FBI
10/04/2008

Champlain, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the arrest of a United States citizen wanted in Florida and Louisiana.

On October 3, CBP officers received notification from Canada Border Services Agency that Alexander Legault, a 59-year-old United States citizen from Evergreen Park, Ill., was being deported to the United States after a failed refugee claim in Canada. Record checks by Canadian authorities revealed the possibility of an active warrant in the United States.

Upon notification, CBP officers performed additional record checks and verified that Legault was in fact, the subject of two active felony warrants, the first issued on March 14, 1986 by the FBI’s New Orleans office and the second issued on January 7, 2000 by the Volusia County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office. The warrants charge Legault with Racketeering, Conspiracy, Organized Fraud, Mail Fraud, Unregulated Security, and Sale/Security by an Unregulated Dealer. The FBI’s is a no-bond warrant and the bond in Louisiana is set at $10,000,000.

CBP officers verified the validity of the warrants and confirmed extradition. Legault was then arrested and turned over to the custody of the New York State Police and transported to the Clinton County Jail pending extradition to Florida and Louisiana.

“This arrest demonstrates the continued cooperation among various U.S. and Canadian law enforcement agencies, as well as CBP officers due diligence in apprehending wanted criminals,” said acting Champlain Port Director Steven Bronson.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
